Goodbye Residency, Hello More Shows

We had so much fun with the Detroit Bar residency that we forgot to update this blog! Our bad. You wanna know how it went? Then check this out... OCAC. That is theOC Arts and Culture article on our residency. It was so much fun! And we really appreciate all the support.

Oh look! About the last 50 seconds of our Detroit Bar residency. Look at all those damn lasers! Looks like fun!... It was. But goodbye residency, hello future shows.

We got two shows coming up! Continental Room, November 15th with The Steelwells!
Oh my goodness. And the Yost Theater in Santa Ana on November 21st with Honeypie, and more band TBA! That show is a very special show because it is our second time we will be playing for our friends Turkey and friends that organize these MS Benefit shows! They're always great and always stacked with great bands! We'll update the site with more details once we get them!

Pretty much, we're excited about everything right now. We can't wait for these shows, we can't wait for the new year, and we can't wait to get back to writing and recording as soon as possible! We wanna share some new music with everyone!

Detroit Bar Residency Update 1

Holy crap. That was fun. We loved pretty much every minute of our first night at Detroit. Ken ran some fantastic sound, Luke served some fantastic drinks and Canvas started the night off perfectly. Hearing them play again was exciting. The pilots have missed them. After that Argyle Smile, a band near and dear to our hearts, mostly cause they know how to party... played an amazing set. They sounded tighter than ever, and everything was in perfect harmony. Toy Robot then pretty much killed everyone in attendance with their super catchy vocals and Loren's face melting guitar riffs. They have a new drummer and key player, both of whom fit right in to Toy Robot's sound like a glove. Then we went on and danced around a little bit, looked like dorks and sang some songs. We did at least one song we've never played before... Thanks to Jared of Argyle Smile for letting me use his ukulele. We were just excited to give everyone a little bit of a light show complete with home-made on stage lights. Our friend Ryan, you may know him from Honeypie, handled the Detroit Bar lights like a damn pro. That is why we love him.

All in all it was a great start to the month. We're hoping people continue to come out and support every Monday this month! We have some more surprises coming up, and always there will be free music being given away!

We really just want to convey that we are so thankful for everyone who came out for the first night! We know the weather wasn't the best, but you all came out anyway. Thank you so much!

This next show will have California Condors (members of Ozma), Gentlemen (Members of No Motiv), us, and then Toy Robot. We can't fucking wait. So screw your commitments, and screw work in the morning... Monday is a holiday... Come celebrate Columbus "finding" a "new" world with us...

Love,
Kyle

OCTOBER RESIDENCY!!!

We are really excited to be announcing that we will be sharing a residency at the (world) famous Detroit Bar, with our lovely friends Toy Robot!

This will be our first residency and we are looking forward to making it something special. We will be playing some brand new songs no one has ever heard because... well, we've never played them live before. We're talking about having a residency only ep to offer up at the shows, and maybe some covers too! So in the next couple days we'll be releasing the lineups for each night... and we are really happy to be playing with some good friends of ours, and some really great bands as well.

We're working hard on making this a fun residency, but will need some help! Actually we'll need a lot of help, from anyone and everyone. We're gunna be asking people to come out and support! It's a Monday night at Detroit Bar which means it's 100% FREE, and as you may know it's surrounded by not only a delicious doughnut shop, but also the best taqueria in Orange County, Alejandro's! (Breakfast burrito #5 tastes like how cocaine makes you feel.) And for people who have never been, this part of the blog is for you... If you love music... it doesn't matter what kind, if you have a passion for music then you gotta support your local scene, and honestly there aren't a lot of better places to do that, than at Detroit Bar. The place not only has a plethora of super talented local artists, but also a crap ton of national touring acts playing all the time. It's just a damn good place to go for some culture in this little black hole south of LA. You will enjoy.

Since the first night is fast approaching we made a little video to promote! And we will be releasing a NEW song this upcoming Monday... Sept 27th, on our facebook, myspace, and on this very blog! So check back! For the first show the lineup will be Canvas, Argyle Smile, and Toy Robot. We have a feeling it's going to be a hot orgy of music. So tell you're friends, and tell your parents... you got plans Monday nights in October.

More updates soon....

Dance Party at The Continental Room

If you missed last week's show at Detroit Bar, then we feel bad for you. It was the first night of the Rye Douglas & The Echo Sounding residency, and they were awesome! Not to mention Inkblots, and White Apple Tree! It was pretty much a dance party all night...

Speaking of all night dance parties!... We're playing a show with two amazing bands at the Continental Room August 17th! Playing with local legends and personal heroes... MOOSTACHE! So you know it'll be a crazy drunken party cause when Moostache and We Are The Pilots get in the same room the debauchery will take hold and things get wild. Wet t-shirt contests, body shots, and maybe some violence. We really can't put into words how much we like this band.

We're also playing with our brothers in arms from San Francisco... Genius and the Thieves! Oh you've never heard of them? Well then you're a bunch of idiots!

Here... they made a video to help you all out with that.

Genius and the Thieves - Quart of Blood Technique from Genius and the Thieves on Vimeo.

It's a great song, and we can't wait!

Oh did we mention that we're playing an acoustic set?! We pretty much never do that... ever, so it'll be something special.

Recording In Temecula pt.1

We had our first weekend of recoding our next album "Opialet" in Temecula at our own make-shift studio, in a barn, in the heat... First day was a total success! So we jammed late into the night, partied like a bunch of wannabe rock stars in our studio barn... fell asleep in our underwear. Second day, we realized the first day was a waste of time, and then the second day turned into a success! Don't believe us? Check out our little video!

Roozie is a beast on drums. We love him.

June 14th W/ The Steelwells & Denny White! Plus - NEW DEMO!

Our friends The Steelwells and Denny White have been gracious enough to ask us play on their Detroit Bar residency! So of course we said "YES!" If you haven't heard of the The Steelwells, and yet you've some how heard of us I have to suggest you unplug you friggin ears, go to their myspace and cleanse yourself in their sonic bliss. If that's not enough for you then you better check out Denny White's music as well! Just click the names and be whisked away into a musical euphony.

So mark it down on your calendars! June 14th! 9pm SHARP! We'll be opening the show, and as always the Monday residency shows at Detroit Bar are FREE for all! (Over the age of 21) Also, check out all the shows, starting June 7th through the 28th! A few of us will probably be at every single one.

In other news... we are writing... and Tyler has been busy starting to demo song ideas we think we'd like to record for the next record! We're starting to get excited so we'll be keeping this site updated on the happenings of our next record "Opialet." We'll also be updating our YouTube channel as well. Here is a video from the end of last year when we thought we were going to make "Opialet" into an EP.

This record will sound a good deal different than our first attempt because we've got the help of two great members Trisha Smith and Roozie Tehranian! And because I'm so excited, I started giving out a sample of a new demo called "You Would Know" without asking anyone in the band. Sorry guys. We should have some new songs to play at the show for you, so get awesome, and come down!

Give "You Would Know" a listen! We hope you enjoy. It might end up sounding way different, but eh.... who cares. I'm having fun.

You Would Know by We Are The Pilots

Melanoid & Toy Robot

We played The Continental Room last night. It was Mother's Day, but only a few mothers actually showed up. We were all disappointed.

We weren't disappointed for long though because it's super hard not to be in a fantastic mood once Melanoid and Toy Robot start playing! If you're not in the know about these 2 bands then you have some fun homework to do! Check them out right now! To get you started here are some videos...

Melanoid at The Continental Room

Video: Justin Deckert

Loren from Toy Robot doing karaoke. Why this video? BECAUSE IT'S AWESOME!

Both these bands played amazing sets and we are truly lucky to have shared the stage with them! We had a great time and we would like to thank everyone for coming out staying late! It was a great time!

April, You've Been So Good

So we are having a fun and crazy month. April hasn't let us down yet. The OC Tavern show with Big Bad Wolf, and the amazing Billy Kernkamp didn't disappoint. Not even a little. I'm sure some pictures will be making their way up in the photo section at some point... but what we're really excited about is this trippy, fade happy, split screen loving DVD the sound guy was nice enough to make for, us eventually finding it's way to this page. Hopefully soon.

Then after a crazy weekend in Coachella I made my way back to Orange County so we could play the I Promote Good Bands showcase at Proof Bar in Santa Ana. Argyle Smile showcased their new guitarist, and Regrets and Brunettes played a super solid set. Then we got up there and did what we do... drink jack and cokes while playing songs in front of people. I think we pulled it off. It was a super fun show.

So now we have a couple shows in May coming up BUT before that, we have our final goodbye show for April. Goodbye April... you were good to us so we're sending you off right with some Honeypie, and Son Of Heatwave at The Sandpiper (AKA The Dirty Bird) Monday the 26th. Should be one dive bar full of happy-go-lucky barflys that night. If the shows this month are any indicator... this will be one badass time. We've been lucky as shit with the turn out and response at the shows lately. We love you.

ALSO! Today is Roozie's birthday! He is choosing to spend it at Detroit Bar with the Everyday Noise Launch Party! Honeypie is playing a set, and Davy is the house DJ all night! Tell that kid you love him. We do.

See you soon and keep your eyes and ears open and ready for some new stuff we're working on.

love,
kyle

MS Benefit In Review

The two reviews only mention us, but they were glaringly different and I felt like both were good to post! So here it is... two reviews of the same show by OC Weekly.

1. Thoughts on Stereofix...

2. MS Benefit at the Yost...

This show was a lot of fun! And we are all thankful we could be a part of it! Not only have we been looking for an opportunity to play The Yost, but to be invited to help raise money for a worthy cause like MS is really the type of thing we love to be a part of. So thank you Steve Guzman, and Kyler Locke and everyone else who helped, for letting us play!
Here are some pictures from that night...Love,

New Album by The New Limb, and MS Benefit Show Art

Last night, Trisha, Tyler and myself went to "The Birdhouse" to listen to our friend's, The New Limb, first full length album called "Sounds People Can Hear." I'll say right now, it sounded awesome. I can't wait to get my giant bear paws on it. The listening party only made me more excited for their album release show at The House of Blues Anaheim on April 3rd.

BUT on April 2nd there is another great show going on a city away in Santa Ana at The Yost Theater. Braving the mean streets of Santa Ana will be Stereofix, Stacy Clark, Beta Wolf, The Relative Strangers, We Are The Pilots, Brother Cecil, and I Hate You Just Kidding. All proceeds from this show will go to the National MS Society to help fund ongoing research. So if you've been meaning to come out and support, this would be the night to do it. Not only support local music, but support the National MS Society. See you there!

KUCI With WATP and Argyle Smile

The Press Pass Music show hosted by Ash is going online for the second time because of UCI basketball coverage, but this is not a bad thing!!! These online shows provide an opportunity for some tom foolery! The first one featured I Hate You, Just Kidding, Billy Kernkamp and Barrett Johnson, and The New Limb! The entire show was damn entertaining, so to keep that tradition going Ash invited us (Kyle, and Trisha) and Argyle Smile (Jared Parsons, and Dana Chambers) despite them being bitter rivals.

Jared Parsons of Argyle Smile

Ash host of Press Pass Music

Whiskey or water?

Trisha Smith of WATP

Ukulele time

The final cut of the show will be posted today at http://presspassmusic.com/ around 4pm. None of us have heard it but recording it was pretty ridiculous... between the sarcasm, cat piano, whiskey, and cover of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" there should be a show in there somewhere. We hope you enjoy it, we probably had too much fun doing it.

2010, New Pilots, New EPs

Lots of thing have been going on. First off... we'll talk about the OC Music Awards Showcase we played at The Continental Room last month. Then our show at the Lucky Owl, and our show at Detroit Bar.
Jan 19th, a Tuesday night on a rainy day was the first night We Are The Pilots played a show after 4 months of some tumultuous times. Since September work on a new EP called "Opialet" had started and technical failures plagued the process early on. At the same time the band went through some member changes. The decision was made to continue on as a 3 piece with maybe some help from a couple friends now and then. With those two forces and the fact we weren't playing live weighing on us we started to get a little worried that we were never going to finish recording and have to let this whole project go. At some point conversations started with Trisha Smith about maybe helping us out on keys. These small jam sessions turned into Trisha eventually playing, writing, and performing with us as part of the band! We couldn't have been more excited about it. Around this time we learned of a drummer that might be down to help us out live for the OCMA show that was coming up. Enter Roozie Tehranian! After one session with Roozie we knew we would be able to get our act together. After a couple more rehearsals through the holidays and Roozie offering to do as many shows with us as we want we started feeling like the last 4 months had been worth it.

So that rainy day at The Continental Room for the OC Music Awards was our first show with Davy on guitar, Trisha on keys/vocals, and Roozie on drums. With the bill packed full of bands we love to play with and see live like Handsome G, Pawn Shop Kings, The Steelwells and Argyle Smile and the place filled to capacity it felt more like a homecoming than a show. We had a great time to say the least and were reminded why this Orange County scene is so much fun. Every band that night played amazing sets, and when it was all said and done the venue estimated that over 600 people came through the doors of a place that can hold about 200. On a Tuesday night for a 21+ show with local bands, we felt like that was pretty impressive, and a good way to start 2010.

A couple weeks after that on Feb 5th we were offered to play the Lucky Owl in Santa Ana for their monthly showcase series. The Letter Read is an act you have to see live. Nicole's voice is something that should be experienced live for sure. The rest of the lineup was the always impressive Canvas, Billy Kernkamp, whose cover of "Tick Tock" by Kesha is to die for, and last by not least BLOK. BLOK is an all out assault on your senses, and an experience we believe everyone should have. The entire show was packed despite the rain coming down like a son of a bitch. We just all cuddled together and enjoyed the Valentine's Day cupcakes, the homemade sangria, and the sound system provided by Carvin.

The following Monday, Feb 8th we got to play with two of our favorite bands, Moostache and Railroad To Alaska. All this month Railroad To Alaska is playing their residency at Detroit Bar. It was such a good time, it's hard to describe how much fun it was, not only playing but watching the other bands! It's nearly impossible to not want to sing along and dance to Moostache, or play air guitar to Railroad To Alaska. We had so much fun, thanks so much to everyone who came out and both the bands for inviting us to play.

Now that we've got a few shows under our collective belt with these new changes, here is what you can expect from us this year... 2 new EPs. The first one, "Opialet" we're working on some ideas for distribution but should have a plan soon. More shows all year long. Shows in San Diego as well as mini weekend tours up to San Francisco and in between. We'll try and keep this blog updated with current events and upcoming shows so feel welcomed to check up and check out whats going on! See you at the next show!

Love,
we are the pilots

(Quick) Update About OCMA Showcase Last Night

Here is the just of what happened last night.

It was AWESOME.

I got an e-mail today saying that almost 700 people came out to The Continental Room on a Tuesday night to see 5 local bands. We played second, and even though the show was running a little late every band played to a big crowd. Once pictures and reviews are up we'll post a proper update. Till then, thanks to everyone who made it out. It really made the night special for us. We felt very welcomed again. We felt at home.

love,

Kyle

New Pilot & New Show

So we have an announcement, our friend Trisha Smith (Honeypie) will be handling keys and backup vocals (possibly some lead vocals too?) for We Are The Pilots! We're pretty damn excited about this! Trisha has played in a few bands you may know, if you've ever been to a show in Orange County, or if you've watched the WB. She sang for OC indie rock band Venus Infers, and was also the voice for the ridiculously lovable Honeypie. Why does she want to play in We Are The Pilots? We have no idea... so we're not going to question it.

Trisha's first show with WATP is coming up! We are playing the OC Music Awards Showcase on Jan 19th at The Continental Room along with The Steelwells, Argyle Smile, Handsome G and Pawn Shop Kings. We pretty much can't wait to play with this new lineup and with these amazing bands. It's free and the music starts at 8! We play early, so for reals... get there on time!

So say hi to Trisha at the show! Or check out this video we put together! Then go to the show and say hi to Trisha!

Love,
kyle
